February Nature Calendar

Have you heard? February is often called “homeschool burn-out month.” We’re at the end of the winter and many of us are ready for open windows and fresh air! Our February bundle is full of ideas for a homeschool to enrich your home life as we wait for spring.
February is also a month of cold weather for some of us, so I continue to offer some indoor nature study ideas weekly in these calendars.
This month for our Scientist spotlight, we are looking at Carl Linnaeus-Father of our Classification system. Linnaeus was an eighteenth-century Swedish naturalist who provided an international language of nature.
He’s not often a household name, but did very important work and contributed so much to science.
The book I am recommending featuring our scientist is Carl Linnaeus: Father of Classification.
A living book and read aloud. This book will introduce children ( and us, moms!) to Linnaeus in an exciting way. This is a chapter book.
(NOTE: There are brief mentions of the theory of evolution)
For younger children, I recommend: Karl, Get Out of the Garden!: Carolus Linnaeus and the Naming of Everything
Also included this month are worksheets. One featuring a sketch of Witch Hazel, two posters of a groundhog and woodpecker, and a classification project.
As we are talking about animal/plant classification this month, hold conversations in nature about sorting things by similarity. Young children will quickly learn the basics of making piles of things based on size or texture.
These nature calendars are just a small taste of what nature study can look like in your home. We are giving you suggestions, and hope they lead to further study.
